neuro-cognitive studies of aesthetics

Neuro-aesthetics is a term coined by Semir Zeki and refers to the study of the neural basis of aesthetic experience. Aesthetics have had a long tradition of an empirical studies since 19th century. Fechner, the founder of experimental aesthetics, established aesthetic principles for pleasure and displeasure. Berlyne carried out his program of the new experimental aesthetics. With this tradition as well as the development of the Neuroimaging technologies, there happened the active studies in Neuro-aesthetics in 20th century. Semir Zeki, Vilayanur Ramachandran, Margrat Livingstone and Arthur Shimamura are pioneer scientists who extended the field of cognitive neuroscience to the domain of art and Mark Rollins and William Seeley are pioneer philosophers who combined philosophical thought with scientific research.
